Speak to Me of Debt - Taurus Season, Scorpio Polarity

"There is no such thing as a free lunch." ~ Unknown Taurus
"Nothing is certain but death and taxes. " ~ Unknown Scorpio

Taurus resides in the 2nd house of 'possessions and values', that which belongs to us. Scorpio rules the opposite 8th house of 'death, sex and shared resources', which includes all debts, be they karmic or to the taxman. Taurus' motto is 'I have'. Scorpio's is 'I desire.' It's easy to see how the endless cycle of rebirth is expressed in this powerful, regeneration-themed polarity. Like all polarities, they are two sides of the same coin.

Taurus seeks to consolidate and has an instinctive drive towards form and material fixity (fixed Earth). Sometimes this is expressed by accumulation of material goods or wealth, or in the form of creating something lasting. You may not be able to take it with you, but you can try to make sure it will still there when you return.

It's said that we return to the world because of karmic debt. Through our good deeds, we may be working off this debt, or we may be inadvertently adding more debt to another's plate, and thus the wheel keeps on spinning. Some astrologers say that anyone in a close relationship with a Scorpio has chosen to work off a lot of karmic debt, since Scorpio is the redeemer (for better or worse).

Taurus quantifies Scorpio karmic debt and gives it tangible, 'market value'. Bulls were always the most prestigious gift animal for sacrificing to the Gods.
Money = energy, ie, power, just like the bull powerful, 'bull market' refers to upward moving trends. But today, debt is the currency, which somehow seems very 8th house. Money has become abstract, mere numbers on a screen, nothing tangible (although real gold never loses it's value). Which begs the question...

Scorpio is the matador that challenges the notion of fixity. The Scorpion, they say, is the only animal that is so acutely aware of it's own mortality, that it will commit suicide when there is no other escape. How instantaneous, to be in a body one moment and not, the next. No matter how or what we build, death is always beside us, reminding us of the transitory nature of our efforts.

In the 12 step alchemical process, which relates to the zodiac, Taurus represents congelation - a congealing, thickening, solidifying or crystallizing. Scorpio represents separation - dividing a substance into it's purified components. In death, our components separate and go back to their elements, in conception, they are brought together again.

Everything we have in the material world, including our physical body (and indeed the garden of Earth) is really just on loan to us, until we die. Ashes to ashes, from which the Scorpio phoenix will rise again. Scorpio is fixed water, and moisture is necessary to make new clay (a new body) from the ashes.

The womb/tomb via which we will again physically manifest, has a distinct resonance, as does a heart beat. Every form is created by sound. Particles, composed of energy, recognize one another's frequency and reconnect, so perhaps are we drawn to our past life karma through them. Particles are like the pieces of dismembered Osiris, which the bull-horned Isis must put back together so he can be reborn.

Virtually every ancient mystery school initiation involves a death ritual, often under the influence of psychoactive substances, before entering a new spiritual life.
Tarot also illustrates such a passage, and the death of ego that the initiate must go through in order to be reborn as their true self. Indeed, the Magician (Mercury), appears to be listening to something - perhaps inaudible - from above, as he shuffles his mundane tools of creation, below.

'Bardo Thodol' (The Tibetan Book of the Dead) translates as 'Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State,' during which the soul/consciousness of the deceased is instructed to 'listen without distraction' through their transition from death to rebirth; the world one experiences is a construction of one's own mind, so do not be distracted, enchanted by or attached to it.

Taurus is the sign of the 5 senses, particularly hearing and smell (ear, nose and throat).  Through them we're connected to the material world, but also to the subtle frequencies or the frequency of essence. Scorpio rules the reproductive organs, our vehicle for rebirth and (temporary) ego death, 'la petite mort.'

Taurus hears the music, Scorpio is the tuning fork.

Coins or pentacles are the suit of physical manifestation - the result, or fruition of all the energy and experience that became this material form, like our physical bodies are the composed of every experience we had, every food we ate, every emotion, etc. - our particles. Upon death, the body begins to de-compose, and the Earth reclaims what is 'owed' to it. Similarly, when someone dies, their money and possessions - the fruits of their labour - are divided amongst their living relations, according to their will.

Coin purses or material wombs ?

The four suits of Tarot represent the four elements: swords/air/mind, cups/water/soul, wands/fire/spirit, coins or pentacles/earth/body. and thus the four ways a body can be returned to them; by burial in earth, sea burial or drowning, cremation, and sky burial (including being fed to vultures, as they do in Tibet).

[Note: I wrote this under the influence of the recent Scorpio full Moon, which was having major effects on my Taurus bod. But the website was acting up so much, putting things in the wrong place, etc, it's a little late being posted, as a result.
Also, fyi, when I speak of the Taurus/Scorpio polarity, I am not referring to individuals born under these signs (although they will often embody the tendencies), but rather the total symbology of the signs. We are all made up of all 12, with emphasis on certain areas, due to planet placements and aspects.]
